Employment – The Dignity of Work

Supported Employment enables our individuals to work within the community. Some individuals receive on-the-job training and continuous support from a job coach so that they can fund and retain employment on the open market. Other individuals train and are hired as a group by a community employer. These individuals work as an enclave within the employer’s facility and are continually supported and supervised by an on-site LifeSpan staff member. Many companies from across the state have partnered with LifeSpan to provide a positive working environment for adults with developmental disabilities.
Community Activity and Employment Transitions
(CAET) is a best practice model on which to base the development of new service alternatives for persons currently receiving services in an Adult Development Vocational Program (ADVP) in Mecklenburg County. The CAET model incorporates individualized, integrated, person-centered, and creative community-based activities as an alternative to ADVP. Individuals receiving services are introduced to the community through employment, educational opportunities, volunteerism, and/or recreation and leisure activities of their choice. Intensive family and individual training in person-centered thinking is offered.
