Current Events:
Dundas has been participating in numerous pottery shows this year, Two weeks ago they participated in show hosted by the Guilford Master Gardeners. At the end of October, they will be participating in another show at the Greensboro Farmers Market. Staff also facilitated a Chick-Fil-A and fish fry fundraisers that raised money for upcoming community based activities. A Wii was donated by Best Buy and individuals and staff have participated in training by a Best Buy employee. A new Gazebo is planned to accent our memorial garden. The hope is to have it installed by January 1, 2009. With Buzz Vanderwerff's help, we landed a new contract with Smith Gifts to sell our pottery. Teri Gregory, and Janine Dixon have  met with Tracey Hartzog and Sylvia Parsons and will be attending the Atlanta Gift Show in January to sell more of our pottery. Lastly, we have been commissioned to produce 40 birdhouses for the Community Foundation's annual luncheon.

Success Story:
This is a success story about an individual standing up for himself and making a choice on how he wanted the Dundas program to benefit him. Every month Dundas has a meeting with staff and individuals in order to make everyone aware of what is happening at the program and how we can all move forward together as a team. I had just finished the last segment of the meeting talking about choice and being able for the individuals to use all the benefits of the program in each area. I stated that individuals did not have to stay in their same classroom all day. I challenged individuals to move around an experience all the special tasks and talents of the staff for the different areas. After the meeting Billy stood up and wanted to talk. He stated that he had a choice, and he wanted to learn how to do pottery. He expressed that he wanted to make birdhouses out of pottery and hopefully make money when he sold his birdhouses. Billy was applauded by the staff and other individuals for standing up for himself. After the meeting Billy packed up his few belongings and moved to the pottery room.

Two months later Billy is an important part of the assembly of the birdhouses. He has learned how to do each step of the creation of the birdhouses. He loves to paint the glazes on the pottery that he has created. He just went to his first show in the community to sale pottery. He had perfected his sale technique of tipping his hat to the ladies when they arrived at his booth to look at the pottery he had helped make for the Dundas pottery program. Billy expressed to staff that he was doing things he only dreamed about.

Dundas will be moving forward in creating a business enterprise for the pottery program. Billy will be able to make money for his creations, and see more of his dreams become a reality. Billy is a success story, and we need to be tipping our hats to him for advocating for himself and making Dundas pottery a name that will be recognized.
