Medicaid is a lifeline for individuals with disabilities, providing essential funding for the services they rely on every day. However, recent federal proposals may put these vital services at risk.
At LIFESPAN Services, we serve over 1,100 individuals with developmental disabilities across North Carolina. Medicaid funding helps provide the programs, care, and support that allow individuals to live more independently, participate in their communities, and thrive. Without it, the future of these essential services is uncertain.
Why This Matters
This isn’t about politics—it’s about people. Decisions made at the federal level directly impact individuals with disabilities and their families. We are working alongside legislators from all sides to ensure these services remain protected because every person deserves access to the support they need.
Medicaid provides essential services that help individuals with disabilities live independently, gain employment, and participate in their communities. These services include:
Personal care assistance
Transportation
Job coaching and employment support
Community-based programs
Healthcare and therapy services
With funding cuts in question, many of these critical services could be reduced or eliminated, leaving individuals and families without the support they rely on.
The Impact of Medicaid Cuts
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), Medicaid is the largest source of funding for long-term services and supports for individuals with disabilities. Budget cuts could lead to service reductions, making it harder for individuals to access care and maintain independence. (Source: KFF)
Additionally, a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) warns that Medicaid reductions could shift costs to states, leading to program restrictions and fewer resources for those in need. (Source: CBPP)
How This Affects LIFESPAN Services and the People We Serve
At LIFESPAN, we work to ensure that every individual has access to opportunities that promote independence and inclusion. Medicaid funding helps sustain the programs we offer in over 20 North Carolina counties, from group homes to employment services. Reduced funding could mean longer waitlists, fewer resources, and increased challenges for individuals and families who depend on these services.
