From Batman to Advocate • Transforming I/DD Support

At LIFESPAN Services, our mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). LIFESPAN offers up to 100 programs and services in more than 20 NC counties. We serve more than 1,000 individuals daily. Our commitment extends beyond direct support to advocating for crucial policy and funding changes that benefit those we serve.

We’re excited to see more organizations joining this cause, including the Colin Farrell Foundation. Known for his roles in blockbuster films like The Batman, Colin Farrell is also a passionate advocate for people with I/DD through his new nonprofit. Founded in honor of his son James, who has Angelman syndrome, this organization is making significant strides in support and advocacy.

Understanding Angelman Syndrome

Angelman syndrome is a rare neuro-genetic disorder that affects the nervous system. It is characterized by severe developmental delays, problems with movement and balance, and a happy, excitable demeanor. Individuals with Angelman syndrome often have difficulty with speech, motor coordination, and may experience frequent seizures. Despite these challenges, many people with Angelman syndrome have a positive outlook and a strong sense of joy!

The Colin Farrell Foundation’s goals closely align with our own, and their initiatives offer exciting opportunities for advancing support for individuals with I/DD. Here’s how their efforts complement our work:

Boosting Funding for Medicaid and Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)

The foundation is advocating for increased funding for Medicaid and HCBS, which are vital for providing necessary support and care. At LIFESPAN Services, where $0.86 of every dollar goes to program services, we see the direct impact of such funding on our ability to offer quality services and expand our reach. More resources will help us better serve the community!

Making HCBS Mandatory

In North Carolina, as in many other states, HCBS are currently optional rather than guaranteed. This means that access to these critical services can vary widely depending on state policies and funding. The foundation aims to make these services mandatory, ensuring consistent access for everyone with I/DD. We support this change because it would provide reliable care across the board, benefiting countless individuals and families.

Streamlining Eligibility

Simplifying the process for qualifying for services is another key goal of the foundation. By making it easier to access support, more individuals can get timely help without unnecessary obstacles. This aligns perfectly with our mission to offer efficient and effective assistance!

We’re excited about the work of the Colin Farrell Foundation and other organizations dedicated to improving support for individuals with I/DD. These efforts are crucial for advancing the quality of care and expanding opportunities for those we serve. At LIFESPAN Services, we are eager to collaborate with these visionary groups to strengthen our collective impact and continue making meaningful strides in enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
